Sparrow hurtled her stocky body into the ice of the river, her teeth clenched with the pure power of the blow. There was a dull crack, the wolf struggled to her large paws but she quickly fell. There was another sharper crack, it was closer now. She scuttled across the ice like a mouse. She didn't know why she had done something so foolish.
Sparrow felt the plates of ice shifted terribly beneath her paws. She let out a startled yelp as the frozen water collapses into the turmoil of gray water. With a desperate howl, she sank into the freezing water. The cold tongues of lapped at her head and she found herself trapped beneath the ice.
Her lungs burned for air as she pushed against the sturdy ice with her back. This was all but a trial to test her skills. She thought to herself, her heart pounding desperately.
Black spots began to cloud her vision as the need for oxygen raised to the point of insanity. The wolf lashed out with the last of her energy at the ice. Her fangs flashed, and she wildly scrabbled at the rough bottom.
She had started to give it up, to drown in the current for her own stupidity. But somewhere a kindle of life still glowed and she bunched her power and crashed into the ice with the broadest part of her skull. There was a sharp crack. From the pain that explosion of pain in her head she wasn't sure if it was the ice breaking or her mind shattering into a thousand pieces.
All she could think about in the air that flooded into her lungs. She sucked up the air greedily. Her eyes bulged with the pure happiness of being able to continue living. The cold was already sucking the energy from her freezing bones. Sparrow's jaw chattered together as she clambered onto the flat surface of the ice. Even thought she was cold, wet, and trembling she let out a watery howl. It was a howl of glee and triumph. She pulled herself onto the ice using the last of the energy, for a moment she just laid on the cool ice. She coughed and vomited the water from her lungs, expelling what wasn't needed.
The young wolf wheezed, water dribbled from the corner of her mouth. A moan erupted from her stiff body, with the greatest effort she had put toward something, she stood up her bones weary to the very core of the marrow. Her shaggy fur was dripping, but the tips of her ears were beginning to gather frost as well as her tail. Her head was lowered as she staggered off the ice. Once, her paw broke through the ice and she let out a stream of frantic barks but she was able to pull her numb paw away.
Now, her muscles seared with hot agony. Like a blazing torch of flame was pressed against her pelt. Many of her steps ended with either her front or rear end collapsing from the mere effort of moving. But each time she heaved herself back up and continued to move to the shelter of a sparse bush.
The bush was ragged and nearly leafless but it would do. She wearily shoved her muzzle through the sharp branches and snarled to anything in the innards of the only place she had to rest. But in the process her nose was cut in several places, but she couldn't feel their subtle stinging as she trudged through the shelter. Finally, she got all of her cold body into the shelter and she collasped like a rock. Not even a grunt back from her, and she was asleep before her head hit the ground.
