Training

Cedarstar stretched in her nest, her ribs like gnarled twigs. Leaf-bare was hard but it didn't mean she couldn't train her apprentice. She sighed as she got to her paws. Hopefully the young apprentice was a good mood today. And hedgehogs would fly," she muttered to herself. She slowly padded towards the apprentice den after she had exited her den. "Cinderpaw!" she meowed, impatient.

Cinderpaw cracked an eye open and grumbled loudly. He slowly got to his paws, his muscles stiff from the cold. He had barely got any sleep. The cold had penetrated every corner in the den. And since all the apprentices liked to keep their distance from him, he had had no one to cuddle up to for the night to capture some warmth. Then there was the coughing. At least someone was coughing through the night. They finally had to chase that apprentice out to the medicine cat den. So it had been a horrible night.

"I'm coming!" he grumbled to Cedarstar. He stretched his aching bones, taking his time. He yawned widely and slouched out of the den to where the leader was waiting.

Cedarstar sat down while she waited for her apprentice. "At last!" she muttered, as her apprentice came out of the den. "Lets go," she meowed, no even looking at him.

Cinderpaw grunted in reply as they trudged out of camp. Just the scene of unmelting snow and merciless bitter winds before them made his moods sink even lower. He hated the cold! For once he just wished that he could have a full meal instead of some measly bites. Everything seemed to dark and bitter at the moment. Nothing, it seemed, could cheer this apprentice up.

Cedarstar glanced at the apprentice. "Green-leaf will be here soon and hopefully we'll all get a decent meal," she muttered. "Come on, lets get going," she added picking up seed.

Once the training hollow was in view, Cedarstar slowed down. "We'll do a couple basic techniques then see if we can find anything worth eating. We don't want to waste our little energy too quickly." she added

Cinderpaw grunted again, not trusting himself to speak. He followed Cedarstar's quickened pace and turned around when they were in the hollow. He padded off a few rabbit-lengths and turned again, so he faced her. He wearily sat down, flicking his tail in impatience. He nodded his understanding and twicthed his ear to tell her he was ready.

Cedarstar sighed, then meowed, "Attack me. We'll discuss about it afterward then i will show you a new move that I think will help you."

She stood waiting for her apprentice to attack her.

Cinderpaw rolled his eyes and crouched. His eyes flicked over Cedarstar, deciding where to target. As he prepared to spring, his eyes slightly grew hazy and they wondered off to the side, as if following something that had suddenly caught his attention. His face grew puzzled as he watched whatever had caught him. suddenly he let out a loud battle cry and flung himself at Cedarstar. He felt a leap of pleasure that his plan had worked. The leader was caught by surprise. He dove for her side and faked-raked his claws along her side. He leaped on top of the she-cat and gently grabbed her ear in his and carefully shook it.

Cedarstar yowled in surprise as her apprentice knocked her over, raking his claws on her flank and felt his teeth on her ear. Furious, she rolled, ripping her ear from his mouth, careful not to crush her apprentice as she rolled. She leaped to her paws and stalked around her apprentice, her eyes searching.

Cinderpaw ducked and rolled away. He leaped to his paws and crouched, watching his mentor very carefully. He started to the left then switched directions and walked to the right. He stopped and took a step to the left but then suddenly sprang at Cedarstar. He slipped under her belly and nipped her foreleg. He rolled away before she could crush him under her weight. He skidded around and aimed a not so powerful blow at the side of her head.
