Rosekit licked Sunkit and stood up and giggled as he fell backwards, "Come on! Lets go to the river! Maybe Bramblefire will be there!" she purred. The two had always loved visiting their older half-sibling who was actually an elder. She would watch and take care of them, like they were her own kits, unlike Badgerstar who wasn't sure what to do with them.
Sunkit perked up immediately as if someone had turned on sun. A smile came to his lips and hopped up his tail straight in the air. "Yeah!" he squealed sounding like a run of the mill kitten for once in the evening. He kneaded the ground and leaped toward a worn forest path, "Race ya!" With that, the golden tom began to race down the path.
The calico cat mrrowed with a purring laugh, and pelted after him her tail whipping her as she raced to the river.
Rosekit barreled in, her soft fur covered with cobwebs and dead leaved but she was panting hard and bouncing from paw to paw in excitement. "Beat you!" she yowled as Sunkit burst in, a moment after her.
The ginger tom trotted to a halt a frown on his face. "That's cheating! You didn't tell me there was a log there!" he accused her, his pelt puffed up with indignation.
"Ha!" Rosekit chided, "You weren't looking, so you running into that log isn't my fault!" She laughed loud and clear, like a trickle of a mountain stream.
An old muzzle pressed its way through some sparse undergrowth. The two kits stiffened and they stared but their expressions melted into happy grins as the face was fully revealed. It was a kindly, brown tabby face. Slightly aged, but lined with tragedy. Sinewy black stripes came from the bottom of her soft green eyes to her jaw line looking like running tears.
It was Bramblefire. The youngest elder of Serpentclan, and daughter of Owlstar. Also Sunkit and Rosekit's half-sister. She purred when she saw the two kits, and limped towards them revealing her black striped body.
Sunkit purred in delight and leaped forward and licked at her face like a begging wolf pup. His dark green eyes glittered like emerald and he rubbed against her feet. "Bramblefire!" he cried.
Rosekit followed close by and politely licked her half-sister's shoulder. She smiled radiantly and looked up at her elder. "We missed you!" she exclaimed.
Bramblefire licked both of their head, and she looked down at them with quiet green eyes. "I thought I heard kits." she purred softly, and nudged them as she hobbled toward the river's bank. The two kits followed her like ducklings.
Bramblefire settled quietly on the bank of the frosted over river. Her dull eyes gazed at the unmoving surface with a peaceful look and she glanced at the two kits. "Where is my father and Blueefire?" she asked, tilting her head to one side.
Sunkit suppressed a hiss of spite, and he turned away waves of anger roiling off his golden pelt.
Rosekit only glanced at her angry brother as she shuffled her small paws and looked down at the ground. She glanced up once or twice at the elder she-cat, "They went looking for Sapphirekit." she murmured.
Bramblefire looked at them nervously, her ears flicking. "Who do they think she went?" she asked licked Rosekit soothingly over the year.
Sunkit answered this by whipping around and giving off a disturbing snarl for one so young. "That filthy shrewstar!" he spat, "They try to keep his identity away from us but I can hear my parents whisper about him."
The calico she-kit looked at her brother sadly, "Please don't say that about them." she whimpered, her lip quivering slightly. "You miss them too!"
The golden kit looked at her out of the corner of his eye, and whispered. "I do miss them, but I wish they would focus on us for once, its like they don't care..."
Bramblefire touched her nose against Sunkit's gently, a faint smile on her lips. "Of course they care." she murmured, and tucked her paws beneath her chest.
Rosekit curled up next to Bramblefire's side, and snuggled her muzzle into her flank glad for the adult contact that she had strived for, for even if her parents were hunting down her sibling at least she had Bramblefire to watch her.
Crickets chirped in the gloom of the evening air, a cold moon hung in the night sky as its luminescent rays illuminated the frozen rivers. The light seemed to play on the ice, glistening and shimmering in a gleeful dance. There was a distant hoot of an owl, but no mouse scurried and only the cricket song echoed through the cool air.
There was tentative paws in the distance. Followed by a tiny wail of fear that seemed to resonate throughout the clearing but was quickly cut off by a sharp hiss. Then a tiny gray bundle rushed into the clearing nearly running into Bramblefire.
