Mousekit was awake and couldn't get to sleep. She was itching to explore in the forest. Finally she got up and went out of the den, looking back at Flowerkit and Sharpkit, making sure they weren't sleeping. She ran across the clearing silently and dived into the forest.

Owlstar was crouched near the entrance. His eye was open wide like an owls and he was surveying all of the camp with a keen eye. The old tom blinked as he thought he seen something scurrying across the clearing. He stood silently and trotted over to investigate.

Mousekit trotted off in the forest and tripped on a rock and went stumbling through the forest and ran into a tree, making a loud bonk. "Ow!" she yowled.

The leader's ears perked again, and he leaped through the undergrowth. He had heard the small exclamation and he was sure that there was a kit out after hours. The ginger cat weaved through the sparse undergrowth. The scent of the kit was familiar, Mousekit, he sighed heavily. Snowface's kit. She was bound to escape, and the leader was bound to catch her. He lowered his broad head and sniffed about the undergrowth once coming within mouse lengths of Mousekit.

Mousekit snuck deeper into the forest, limping because his paw had gotten hurt when he tumbled to knock into a tree. He neared a stream and crouched beside it. He saw something-something silver. A fish! He splashed in the water and caught nothing but the shiny pebbles. He hissed in frustration.

Owlstar's torn ears perked then he trotted through the icy tendrils of the limp branches of the willows. He jumped through the sparse undergrowth. The tom cat stretched out as he reached the river. A small patch of the river was unfrozen and he gasped in shock. Maybe a fish would be lurking in the cold water! He scurried toward the water and nearly stepped on a kit. "Mousekit?" he exclaimed in surprise, then his tone turned angry and serious. "Mousekit!"

Mousekit looked back, fear and guilt rushed through her. Oh no! She leaped to a bramble bush on the other side of the stream, accedently jumping not far enough and landing on the other side of the stream, on ice! That ice was so delecit that it cracked beneath her paws. She yowled in fearness and the ice broke. She could feel water sinking through her fur, she could feel the coldness. "Ah!" She girggled as water filled her mouth. She sank underwater, trying to swim, but she was sinking!

Owlstar bristled indignantly, A Riverclan cat that couldn't swim! he thought shamefully, and leaped toward the broken ice. The freezing water lapped at his numbing paws put he pushed through an area of slush and dunked his head into the writhing black water. His head was consumed in a writhing mass of terrible cold water. He couldn't see through the blackness of the night river. His paws were on the ice and he secretly hoped the kit had not drifted beneath the ice. But his fangs met fur and he lifted out a sodden scrap of fur. He didn't stop to set the kit down and try to help it, he just bolted toward camp, ice freezing on his whiskers.

Mousekit, shivering, mewed "Owlstar, I'm so sorry!" The words flooded out of her mouth. "It won't happen again!" Mewling from coldness she was carried back to camp, feeling guilty. Once they got back to camp, she knew she would get in big trouble.

Owlstar gave a faint snarl of disappointment. He gave the kit a sharp shake, and he jumped into the camp. Dawn's new light stretched across the clearing, yawning as the new day over threw the deep night. He suppressed a shiver, and he trotted over to the nursery. He dropped Mousekit at his feet, his jaw stiff from the cold. "Snowface!" he growled, but his angry tone was hollow for he remembered their old companionship and he couldn't stop thinking about Blueefire. He shook his head as her brilliant green eyes appeared in the gloom. "Yes, Owlstar?" her voice was soft and silken, but there was quaint sense of sadness in at she gazed upon her leader. He averted his single eye, "Mousekit was found sneaking out of camp, nearly drowned." The leader's teeth were clenched when he thought of a Riverclan cat drowning.

Mousekit shrunk back, embarresment and guilt flooding over her. "I'm sorry." She mumbled, head down and tail drooped. She was prepared for scolding from her mother, Snowface. Flowerkit and Sharpkit bobbed their heads from behind Snowface to see Mousekit soaked. Flowerkit looked dissapointed and Sharpkit was glaring at her. Mousekit flooded with even more embarresment, now that her siblings saw her shivering and guilty. And she knew how Flowerkit never got in trouble and always tried to persuade Mousekit not to get in trouble. Mousekit felt even more guilty. She betrayed her Clan, her mom, and her brother and sister. And Mousekit betrayed herself, thinking, she was so stupid to do that, she knew, and she got herself in trouble, and she's just about to get the consiquences.

Snowface looked at Mousekit, dissappointment clouding her emerald green eyes. She shook her head slowly and glanced at Owlstar. "Thank you for bringing her back." her voice held no emotion, "But I should probably get her to the Medicine Cat, or she could get a cough." The queen licked her kit's cold ears and stood up. Owlstar stood stiffly, and glared at Mousekit. "You are to care for the elders for a moon." he growled, and he stalked off. "What am I going to do with you?" Snowface asked softly. She sighed, and picked up Mousekit.
