Morningpaw leaped in, her thick gray fur was puffed out with excitement and she kneaded the ground with her heavy paws. His blue eyes watched the foliage for her mentor she had finally warmed up to his eager niece. "Ratwhisker!" she yowled, "Hurry up!"
Ratwhisker growled softly and rolled his eyes. His lean body slunk through the depleted undergrowth, he warily glanced up into blue sky. It was nearly all rich blue despite a few white clouds that dotted the sky. "I'm coming, Morningpaw!" he yowled in return, just as he jumped into the clearing. "We can train today."
The gray apprentice gave a little jump of joy and ran for her mentor, her mouth a blur as she spoke quickly. "What are we doing today? Hunting? Fighting? Looking around the forest? What are we doing!?" She had gotten right into his face and was only a few mouselengths away from his nose.
He recoiled from the apprentice and trotted forward so he was slightly away from the apprentice. "Fighting." he said dryly, not eager to spike a conversation
"Oh! What move will we learn?" Morningpaw pestered, as she approached him again. "I bet I'll fight like a leader, no, like two leaders! I'll be better then any one else!" she continued to ramble on, as her mentor icily cut her off.
"Shut up!" He snarled, "Just be quiet and listen to the lesson, and I'll see what I can do for a pathetic fighter like yourself!"
Her pale blue gray eyes widened slightly in shock, she took a paw step back away from Ratwhisker. It was the first time for which she was lost for words, sullenly, she lowered her head and didn't look at him.
Ratwhisker grimaced then glared at his apprentice for a moment. He clenched and unclenched his jaw in indecision of what to saw further to his apprentice. He whipped his body and stalked toward a vacant area of the clearing.
The apprentice slowly followed him, her paws dragged on the soil and her long tail traveled in the dust. She sat across from her mentor, and her ears were perked with interest but her eyes glanced away from his.
Ratwhisker looked down at Morningpaw was a contemptuous expression, "The move I'm teaching you today is the back kick, its an explosive move you would make if chased from behind. You balance on your front paws and lash out with your hind paws." The lean bengal tom lifted onto his hind paws and kicked out into the open air. He dropped onto all fours again, "If that was you, you wouldn't be able to talk for a long time with a messed up jaw."
Morningpaw nodded mutely.
The serpentclan deputy looked at her expectantly, his ears flicking. "Well, then I'm going to attack you from behind and I want you to defend yourself." He looked at her curiously, then ran quickly a few foxlengths away.
Morningpaw tensed and stood stiff legged and waited for the attack. Her round ears perked to listen to his descending paw steps, they were gaining speed and her paws prickled with excitement. Finally his pounding paws rung in her ears like her own heart beat and she lashed out her hind paws and they clashed onto her mentor's chest with a hollow thump.
