Rosepaw sniffed the ground and slunk through the undergrowth. She paused in a bush, her mouth slightly open to bring in the fresh scents of the forest. Her keen green eyes narrowed as she scanned the leaf litter.
Her ears perked when a leaf twitched, slowly she moved forward. She crouched so low, that her belly fur brushed the dewy ground. The apprentice wrinkled her nose, and her whiskers twitched. Every other step she froze to inspect the slightly twitching leaf.
The tortoiseshell growled and her hind quarters wiggled slightly and she tensed just before her powerful leap toward the leaf. Her paws pressed onto the leaf, thinking she had caught herself a mouse. But as she peeked from between her paws there was only a leaf.
"Darn it!" Rosepaw growled, her ears flattened against her skull. The she-cat swatted the leaf away and sat into a clump of crisp grass.
She took a hind leg and scratched behind her ear vigorously. After a moment she resumed her hunt. At first, she padded openly through the forest eying all the possible hunting areas. Then there was a distant flutter of wings and she went down.
Rosepaw's senses went wild as she searched for the source of the noise. And there, in the warm sunlight, stood a vibrant blue jay with a crown of feathers upon its narrow head.
The tortie smiled and began to stalk towards the unaware bird. For a moment she paused, thinking it wrong to kill such a beautiful creature then she silently laughed and slowly crept forward her tail stiff.
In short bursts she came forward, and when Jay looked about she froze and mid step, she quavered slightly at the effort it took to stand so still. Just as she was about to collapse the bird turned away. She dropped back onto to all fours and charged at the bird. It tried to fly but she took the biggest leap she had ever done and hooked her claws onto the bird's wings.
At first it was a struggle to keep the bird down but then she snapped its neck. She purred proudly and sauntered towards Thunderclan camp.
