The loner jumped nimbly through the undergrowth her tail waving playfully. She pounced on a leaf, and chased it as the wind picked it up. The young cat clasped her paws together just barely missing the leaf. She fell to all four paws, and began to stalk in the leaf litter as the floating debris landed on a root. "And here it end..." she whispered dramatically.
Sorrel bunched her muscles in her hind paws, and tensed to spring. Like a loaded cannon, she burst forward her paws stretched out in front of her. "I've got you!" She yowled, and tackled to leaf, tearing it to shreds. "Haha! No one can defeat the mighty Sorrel!"
Suddenly, she froze as if she just noticed where she was. Looking around awkwardly, she shook the bits of leaf from her claws and licked her ruffled fur, chuckling to herself. "I'm supposed to be what the clans call an apprentice." The tortie shook herself, "I shouldn't act like such a kit!"
The young she-cat arched her back in a delicious stretch, and stifled a yawn that threatened to take over her face. "A little nap will be fine, I've been exploring so much." She continued to speak to herself as she settled in a pile of crisp leaves in the shade of the bush. Her yellow eyes slowly closed, and she drifted into sleep.
When the sun at reached the center of the sky and was beginning to drip down into darkness, was when Sorrel woke up. Her eyes stayed close and she didn't shift or stretch, for she could feel eyes staring at her though she couldn't see them.
Tensing, she remembered the lessons her mother had taught her. She tried to locate the area of the watchers, she guessed they were on either side of her with a gap between them where her head was positioned. With lightning quickness, she burst through the gap and whirled around and tackled the largest one. A black and white tom with vibrant green eyes. She wrestled him to the ground easily, and pinned his front paws to the ground. "Why are you staring at me!?" she snarled.
Sorrel heard a squeal of fear and a rush of paws. She guessed it was the smaller cat, a she-cat, but she didn't get to look at the other cat. The fur along her spine was bristling with fury, "Well!?" she demanded.
Serpentkit could barely believe what had happened, he had just stumbled upon a sleeping she-cat and now he was pinned against the ground facing the most savage thing he'd ever seen. He couldn't answer with the snarling face above him and he only let out a terrified cry. He tried to batter her belly with his paws, but he wasn't strong enough to do any damage.
Sorrel's eyes widened as she realized it was just a silly kit, but he needed to be taught a lesson. She dug her claws into his paws, and pressed them harder against the ground. "Answer me, you weakling, or is all you can do is squeal?!"
"I...I...I..." He stuttered fearfully, letting out a whimper.
The loner cat gave the kit a jerky shake, "Out with it, kit!" she snarled, baring her teeth a mouselength from his young face.
Sorrel slowly raised her head, her lip uncurlng slightly as there was another rush of pawsteps. They were heavier then before, and she began to worry but the as she felt the kit start to quiver below her paws her confidence was regained. "You gonna speak, huh? Fox got your tongue?"
Zebra burst through the undergrowth, a streak of black and white. He grasped at the cat who had pinned his son, Serpentkit. He wouldn't stand it, and he took the tortoiseshell she-cat's scruff in his jaws and shook her violently.
Serpentkit stumbled to his black and white paws, nearly falling onto his rump as he teetered backwards. He bumped into Hailkit as he backed up, "Thank you, Hailkit, I thought she was going to kill me."
Sorrel gasped in surprise as she was lifted and was thrashed about. Her head was rattling, so she jabbed her thorn sharp claws into the black and white tom's face. She clung to his for dear life but her claws were sliding from their grips as he continued to shake her.
Zebra snarled in pain and dropped the cat. He reared onto his hind legs and started smashing his paws against the forest floor.
The she-cat scurried backwards, avoiding the paws that could break bones if they struck home. She looked onto her enemies face and was nearly crushed by the falling paws as she saw his blood red eyes. Terrified, she got onto all fours and tried to run away.
Zebra wouldn't let his son's tormentor off so easily. He cut her off and latched his strong jaws around her tail and threw the tortoiseshell loner into the air. He saw her fall and he dived for the she-cat again and threw her into the air. This time he jumped and caught her in his jaws around her neck.
The air left Sorrel's lungs in a great burst of air. She clawed at as the muzzle of the black and white tom but it was hopeless and she could barely breath due to the constriction around her neck. Her voice was a thin wail of terror.
Mintleaf had heard the distressed cry, she had been hunting in a different region of the forest and she hoped at her Sorrel would be safe, but she was wrong. The queen crashed through the undergrowth, terror lifting her paws from the ground. Her daughter's warm filled her nostrils as she crashed into the clearing, looking like a wild warrior. Her golden eyes searched the clearing for no more then a heart beat, then she charged once more and bowled the black and white tom over. She knew this cat well, "Zebra! I excepted better of you!" she cried in disbelief but was relentless.
The black and white tom was surprised enough to practically cough up the young she-cat. He knew this cat as well, "Mintleaf? What are you doing here?" He seemed truly puzzled and leaped back, his fur bristling but his posture not as tense but he continued to stare at the tortoiseshell. "I need to take care of the cat that tormented my son!"
The long haired she-cat didn't relax, "Your son's tormentor?! That's my daughter, Sorrel! Leave my kit alone!" She snarled, her claws unsheathed and her eyes like razor daggers.
Zebra arched his back and squared his shoulders and set his paws apart. His black tail was raised high, and proudly. "I don't want to hurt a fellow respectable loner, but I must avenge such bullying." He snarled, slashing his claws through the air in warning.
"You think I shall back down!?" She screeched in fury, "I'll show you!" The pure white queen rammed straight into her opponents chest, her naturally short tail puffed up to twice its original size.
The air was knocked straight out of his chest, he greedily gulped in air and he savagely engaged in combat with the furious she-cat. His claws scored her flanks and her teeth met flesh and bone. They were a whirling mass of claws and fur. Neither wanting to back down to the other.
Sorrel had slide across the leaf littered floor and struggled to her paws. On both of her sides was a kit, on one was the one she had pinned down and the other was a delicate gray, darker around the face with stripes around their paws. She was out numbered and could see the indignation in black and white kit's eyes. "Ah, come on, two against one, that's not fair..."
Hailkit softly stepped forward, not speaking a word. But the darkness in his glittering blue eyes spoke his anger and need to return his bigger brothers honor. His tail lashed, and he hooked his claws on Sorrel's back and drew her in closer to himself.
Serpentkit hit the other side, and sank his teeth into her shoulder angrily, shaking his head to and fro to cause more damage to the wound.
Sorrel hissed and laid her ears back, striking the top of their heads every chance she got. They were equally matched, they tussled it out not getting into it as passionately as the adults who were screaming at the top of their lung and hacking at each others fur and skin.
The two adult cats were exhausted, though they had only been fighting a short while, the pure passion of the fight has worn them down to nearly collapsing. They broke apart panting and gasping for air, they glared at eachother. Mintleaf didn't fear his blood red eyes, she had lived with Haze for the young part of her life and this cat wouldn't scare her. Almost as if they were rehearsed, they whipped around at the time and gathered up their kits. The white she-cat just grabbed the bleeding Sorrel kit from the tussle by the scuff and began to slowly edge away.
Zebra swept his tail in front of Serpentkit and Hailkit and slowly began to edge the towards the forest. Mintleaf and himself shared a hate filled glare before they each separated to hide in the depths of the forest they lived in once more. As the loners they would always be.
