Hazelfire bustled in the make shift den her and her two kits had lived for the past two quarter moons. Loudkit and Featherkit played in the sunlight, they squealed and batted at eachother and the queen couldn't help but regretting what she had to do. "Come, Loudkit and Featherkit." she called over to them, "We're going to see your father."
Featherkit hopped towards her mother's paws. "Loudkit bit me!" she complained, pausing to lick her shoulder. She puffed up her silver fur, "It wasn't nice!"
The queen soothingly licked Featherkit's ear, and then turned to Loudkit who had his ears laid back. His green eyes were narrowed. "Is that true, Loudkit? Did you bite her? That's not nice to do." she scolded gently.
Loudkit shuffled his paws guiltily, "I didn't mean to, well, not that hard..." he confessed, looking down at the ground his tail drooping.
Hazelfire smiled despite herself, "Its okay, but say sorry to your sister." The ginger and white cat nudged him toward Featherkit.
"I'm sorry I bit you, Featherkit." he apologized, licking her nose to add to it.
The silver she-kit didn't need anything else, and butted her head against his shoulder. "Its okay Loudkit!" she said brightly, "Come on! Race you to that tree!" Featherkit indicated a tree that was leaning far over to the side.
Hazelfire watched them dash off sorrowfully, she tried to remain bright to the visit to her mate. But then... it would be goodbye... Goodbye to the ones she held most dear. She sighed and thought over her plan for the thousandth time today. When they met up with Cloudheart, all together they would go to the river. She wished they wouldn't have gone to the river, so many memories that were dear to her happened there. When they arrived they would meet up with Mintleaf and Sorrel. The queen choked up when she thought of the last part. The kits would go with Mintleaf, she would have to tell them they were just going to stay there awhile. But she didn't know if she would ever see them again.
The kits had returned from their race, Featherkit arriving victorious. She didn't know why her mother was walking so slowly. She placed her tiny paws on Hazelfire's fore leg. "Mama, whats wrong?" she asked, with a tilt of her head.
She didn't look at her kits curious, and tried to sound cheerful. "I'm just excited to see your father." Featherkit paused, thinking it was an odd answer but jumped forward and swatted at Loudkit who looked cross from losing the race.
All three of them padded through the shaded pine forest. It was so different from the cozy oak wood that she had always lived in, but she wasn't allowed there with her kits. She remembered the gut wrenching disappointment at herself when Badgerstar had sent her away. Never to return if she had her kits with her. Hazelfire could barely imagine leaving her kits, but without a clan she felt empty and desolate.
The queen shook her head to clear it, and jumped forward. "Come now, just through these brambles..." She pushed through the undergrowth, picking up Featherkit in her jaws amidst a chorus of complaints of thorns and prickles.
Cloudheart was sitting at the base of a strong smelling pine tree when she heard the rustling of undergrowth being shifted and squeals of protest. He smiled bitterly, his blue eyes dull and unhappy. He stood and trotted toward the patch of brambles and couldn't help chuckling at the sight. Hazelfire had gotten her backside through the brush, but thorns had snagged her fur and locked her in place. She had the protesting Featherkit in her jaws, and Loudkit was squealing at the top of his apparently strong lungs about being stuck in the thorns.
"Well, help Cloudheart!" Hazelfire growled through Featherkit. "We are clearly stuck!"
The snow bengal chuckled and picked up Loudkit who had stopped squealing and started batting at his father's whiskers. He playfully rolled her across the pine needles where he splayed out giggling. Cloudheart quickly pulled at the thorns in his mate's fur, "I must hurry or that little terror will get me again!" He tugged the thorns out one by one, "Freedom!" he exclaimed.
Hazelfire backed out of the problem and put down Featherkit and brushed her muzzle against Cloudheart's cheek. "I've missed you Cloudheart." she purred softly.
The tom licked her ear, "I missed you too... OW!" He jerked his tail away from his kits play, then had pounced on the unmoving tail and bitten into it. "I need that tail! Or I'll be as without a tail as Owlstar!" The kits knew he didn't mean his exclaimed words and jumped about trying to get his tail once more.
Hazelfire smiled down at her kits but her heart seemed to be hollow with grief. Her mate seemed to pick up on her sadness. He just looked at her and told the kits they were going to the river.
"The river?" Loudkit squealed in excitement, "I'll get there first!" He leaped over Featherkit and raced towards the river. The silver kit hurried after him her tail flailing.
"Don't go into the water!" Hazelfire called after them, but they didn't seem to hear and she sighed.
Cloudheart licked her cheek in amusement, but his eyes were glinting with regret. "I wish we didn't have to do this..."
"Its for the best..." The queen whimpered sullenly, and padded toward the river slowly. Her bright green eyes did not hold their lively glimmer as her tail was dragged. Every paw step was an effort not to go mad with grief.
Cloudheart touched his nose to her, "It will be okay, its for the best... you'll still be able to see me." He meowed soothingly.
She froze, and she lifted her head, tears threatening to fall. "No... I can't see you again Cloudheart..." she whispered.
The snow bengal froze as well, and looked at her in disbelief. His eyes had widened slightly. "If thats how you want. It will be done." he meowed without emotion.
The pair walked in silence until they reached the river, the kits seemed to notice something different but they didn't bother to bring it up. They were splashing in the shallow, squealing with delight and pouncing on little pebbles.
"When is she coming?" Hazelfire asked in a whisper.
Cloudheart scented the air silently, "Shes here."
The two looked at the shadow of a tree where a pure white long haired she-cat who looked battered from a recent battle. She dipped her head, "Sorry I'm late, I got into a scuffle." She saw them exchange glances. "Oh it was nothing-Oh! Are these the kits?"
The young loner crouched low looking at the two kits who had paused from their game to look at the new cat. It wasn't long before they charged for her and pounced onto her back.
"I've got her, Featherkit!" Loudkit squealed.
"Shes got no tail!!" Featherkit exclaimed in wonderment, as she clambered onto her back.
Hazelfire stood, "Get off her, she has to talk to the warriors!" She scolded quietly.
The two kits slid off to play fight against themselves nipping at each others ears and shoulders.
Mintleaf stood and padded toward the pair, her amber eyes glinting. "They are wonderful kits." she commented warmly, as she watched them play.
"You promise to watch them?"Hazelfire asked tensely, her tail twitching. Cloudheart nodded in agreement.
"I promise." The white loner meowed strongly. "They will get along great with Sorrel." She smiled.
"Well then..." Hazelfire swallowed sadly, "I'll bring them over. Featherkit! Loudkit! Come over here, please."
The kits came tumbling over to them, fur flying and then stopped their fight to look up at their mother they had known for such a short time.
"My little ones..." she whispered, "You at going to go with Mintleaf here. Your going to be with her for a long time, but you will always be in my heart. You aren't coming to the clan with me right now."
Featherkit picked up on her mother's sad mood, and started crying. "But I wanna stay with you!" she wailed.
Hazelfire nuzzled the silver kit soothingly, tears breaking through the corner of her eyes. "Oh, oh... don't cry... be strong, you have your brother."
The ginger tom kit had watched in silence but he pressed himself against his mother trying not to cry. "I'll take care of her... nothing will happen when I'm around."
The ginger and white queen drew her head away, "Go with Mintleaf now..." she murmured.
The two kits drooping and dragged themselves towards Mintleaf. They looked longingly back at their mother but they couldn't return to her now.
Hazelfire was crying openly now, the tears streaking her face. "Goodbye... may seem forever... but your memory will be forever in my heart..." she whispered for only herself to hear, she watched with tear filled eyes as she watched her beloved kits slowly fade into the forest...
"Hazelfire." His voice made her leap back into reality. "I will escort you back to Serpentclan." His voice was dry and emotionless, tense from heartbreak.
Cloudheart led her through the pine forest and through the heart of Darkclan. Their paw steps were muted by the needles upon the dry ground. They didn't speak a single word, the tension grew between them until it was nearly unbearable. Then there was a fall of heavy paws with three new cats emerged.
The deputy of Darkclan, Froglegs, a senior warrior who was much larger then the others by the name of, Greycloud. And finally a slim she-cat with thick creamy fur and a dark brown face, paws, ears, and tail. It was Cloudheart's sister, Fawnpelt.
"Who is this, Cloudheart?" rasped Froglegs, dryly.
"An intruder. I was leading her back into her own territory, sir." Cloudheart said quickly.
Greycloud lumbered over to Hazelfire, his long gray tabby fur puffed up and he sniffed her. "Serpentclan, and the kin of the leader." The big cat smiled lazily.
Fawnpelt shoved her way between them, looking at her brother. "Why didn't you call for other clan cats?" she asked.
"It didn't seem necessary, she didn't put up a fight." he returned.
"Then you won't mind if we join you?" Froglegs asked.
"Not at all." Cloudheart answered.
The group of three cats formed around her and they marched toward the edge of the territory and not a word was spoken until they got there, and the two senior warriors growled and snarled insults.
Cloudheart ushered Hazelfire away from them, "I will always love you, my dear, even if I will never see you again. You will be forever in my heart."
The young queen swallowed, "And I will never forget you, my love." She whispered.
"Hey! What are you saying to her?" Greycloud demanded, looking over at Cloudheart.
"Just telling her never to come back!" Cloudheart yowled to them, and he whispered to Hazelfire one final time, "I love you with all my heart." And he ran towards the other Darkclan cats.
Hazelfire watched him, and bolted into her own territory, tears streaming down her face. "And I will forever love you..." she gasped as all she loved seemed to dissolve.
Featherkit hopped towards her mother's paws. "Loudkit bit me!" she complained, pausing to lick her shoulder. She puffed up her silver fur, "It wasn't nice!"
