Rosepaw padded in, her bright green eyes roving the shrubbery for signs of prey to return to her clan. She sniffed at a scraggly piece of grass and wrinkled her nose in disappointment. Nothing was ever in this part of the forest, she wondered why she had even bothered. The apprentice's tail twitched, and she leaped through some undergrowth.
The calico lifted her muzzle to the wind and breathed in the cool air. No prey, but something... The warm scent tickled her nose in its sweetness. It made her heart smile, Rosepaw gave her head a shake and investigated the scent.
Her delicate white paws brushed the damp grass and leaf litter as her nose nearly touched the leaves. She didn't notice the sunlight slowly stopped touching the ground with its warm light and the forest got chill. A shudder ran up her spine and she lifted her head. She took a wary step backwards but a soft mew refocused her.
It was just a mere whisper of sound but it was enough for her to set aside her fears for a moment. Rosepaw crept forward smooth as a snake in the grass. Her ears pressed against her skull and she peered over a patch of thick grass. She nearly gasped in surprise.
In a circular pressed down area of grass was a kit! A lovely little kit curled up, its tiny gray flanks raising and falling in rhythm. Her ears perked up and her green eyes brightened a lighter shade. Warily, she lowered her nose to poke it. With the tiny nudge the kit let out a squeak.
Rosepaw jumped back in surprise onto her back at the sound. But swiftly she righted herself and looked at the kit again. Its bright blue eyes stared at her blankly, and she stared right back. She poked her head through the long grass to give it a tentative sniff. The kit was a little tom, he was solid gray with no breaks in the color. Her eyes squinted at the kit, and she smiled brightly.
"Whats your name?" She asked in a sweet voice, coming a little closer to the kit, "Wheres your mother?"
The gray kitten looked around blearily and yawned. "I don't know." His tiny voice seemed so lost in the great forest, "My momma hasn't been here for awhile, and I'm hungry!" He squinted at her, "Are you going to feed me?" He stumbled up and brushed his little head under her chin.
Rosepaw backed up, "How am I to feed you if I don't where your mother is?" Her ears flicked awkwardly, "And what am I to call you, little one?"
"My momma gave me a mouse the last time I saw her! It was so tasty!" Stingkit squealed and bounced around at her paws, "But when I last saw her she licked my head gave these little black seeds and just left!"
Rosepaw wasn't sure what that all meant but she was certain the little kit was by himself now, "Well," she licked his ear, "I guess you can stick with me, but I'll call you Stingkit, but you seem to be a loner of types maybe when your older you can just be Sting but for now your my little Stingkit." She purred.
"Yeah! I'm Stingkit!" He leaped about and scrabbled on the she-cat's soft fur, "Lets go hunting! I'll take down the biggest bird ever!" He batted at her pointed ears, and slid down her face, purring.
Rosepaw laughed at the kit and stood up and beckoned for Stingkit to follow her. She already felt a strong affection for the bouncy cat. She led him out of the dark forest into the lighter, prosperous forest. The scents of prey immediately hit her and she whispered in the kit's ear to hush. The apprentice crouched low, her belly fur caressing the grass below her. A mouse scurried in the shadows of the roots beneath the tall trees. Her eyes narrowed slightly and she slid forward fluidly.
Her paws were light as feathers int he silent forest. Rosepaw's ears were pinned back against her head, and her teeth bared at the intensity inside her grew to the breaching point. The forest was still the moment before her muscles tensed and she lunged toward the rodent with deadly accuracy. Her claws pinned its small body to the ground and she mercilessly killed it. The she-cat shook the tension from her body and trotted toward the kit. "Here! A fresh mouse. we can share it." She crouched close to him, and took a bite from the mouse before nudging it toward Stingkit who started devouring it in famished bites. "Don't eat so fast, now, chew your food." He slowed his eating slightly, and sudden realization came over her, "Great Starclan! I never introduced myself! I'm Rosepaw!"
"Hewwo Wosepaw!" The kit meowed cheerfully with a mouth full of mouse, he swallowed loudly, "I'm Stingkit!" he giggled at himself, and dug into the mouse again.
Rosepaw purred fondly at Stingkit, and licked her paws slowly. She wondered what she was going to do with the kit, she would bring him to Thunderclan and a queen would watch him... But a though hit her, she didn't want to give him up. A growl rose in her throat, she was capable of caring for a single kitten! If her mother, Blueestar, figured out though... she would be skinned! The calico's face screwed in wily determination, she was set on accomplishing this. A sigh heaved her narrow chest, her parents won't be happy about this but she was sure it was right.
She watched the kit finish the mouse and lick his whiskers in satisfaction. "Come, little one, lets go to a warm nook in Thunderclan's wonderful forest." Rosepaw licked the kitten's ears affectionately, "We can be like a little family by our selves, I can be your mother for you, it'll be wonderful, won't it...?" She trailed off as she led her little kit through the shadows of the wood.
