Bumblepelt's sides heaved with exhaustion, and her paws fumbled on the thick layer of ice that covered the moor ground. She skidded to a hault with a sigh, lowering her head. Her hazel eyes gazed intently at the barely noticable footprints in the hard snow. Rabbit prints. The brown she-cat's whiskers twitched. She was so close to reaching the rabbit, but try as she might, the lithe rabbit kept getting away.
She cringed with sadness. If only her Clan could actually have something to eat she would be able to catch that mousebrained rabbit!
Her eyes narrowed with concentration, and Bumblepelt crouched down. She unsheathed her claws instinctively, and bunched her hindquarters. She waited until her breathing slowed down; she was ready. Bumblepelt's hazel eyes automatically flicked towards the rabbit. It was resting beneath a tiny frost-encrusted bush.
The she-cat allowed herself a brief grin, before springing up out of her crouch. Bumblepelt sprinted full on at the rabbit, ignoring the pang of hunger in her stomach. The rabbit looked up, its beady black eyes widening as it struggled to sit up in the slippery snow. Seconds before it started to run, Bumblepelt leaped, her paws outstretched, and landed directly on the rabbit, snapping its spine with the force of her two paws.
The brown and black she-cat looked at the prey she just caught. It was small - pathetically small. She smiled, but it was full of sadness. Picking up the fresh-kill, Bumblepelt trotted back to her camp with her tail dragging in the ice-cold snow.
