Featuring Suneagle, by Owlstar, and Scarletsparrow by Bumblestar.
Suneagle stretched his sinewy body with a leisurely yawn. Despite the cold and frozen river the young tom was doing well in the clan. His wandering brought him to the prey that impatient warriors probably wouldn't find, but he spited himself for occasionally being greedy with his prey. He tried his best though, and he doubted half of his clan knew of his existence due to his relentless wandering. He frowned fretfully, and went about his walking; he hadn't been near water, other than insignificant puddles, for such a long time it felt like his heart was aching to feel the familiar lap of water of his pelt. But he couldn't bear to look at his own reflection which brought so much shame to him. Suneagle had made his way all the way to the clearing. His paws ached slightly, but as his tongue rasped across his pads he gazed thoughtlessly towards the cats. They stank of sickness and starvation, he wished new-leaf would come to rid the forest of this retched feeling of foreboding and suffering for the weakest of their clan to the very strongest leader.
Scarletsparrow paused momentarily, taking in the night sounds. It was very quiet, but the sound of ice and snow buffeted against her ear fur. Her claws unsheathed, and she grits her teeth, pushing through the brambles surrounding the clearing. Scarletsparrow was bigger now, stronger - better fed then she was before. Her muscles flexed under her wiry gray and orange pelt, and she raised her head. Her orange eyes seemed to glow in the nighttime. Her tail flicked, her mouth open, scents wafting past her scent glands.
His torn ears twitched slightly, though his hearing had been impaired by his scored ears he could hear the familiar sound of pawsteps on the snow that numbed his toes as he walked. But this gate was familiar enough for him to twitch in surprise, he hadn't seen her since their meeting on WindClan territory. Suneagle wondered if she still had a grudge against him for his wrong doings, he truly had only wanted to run on the moor. A tiny chuckle came from his throat, he must've gotten his urge to seek new places from his father, he was always somewhere new. The scarred tom moved smoothly into the standing position and looking around with his nose to the wind, a smile took territory on his face. It was definitely Scarletsparrow, but she seemed more confident in her ways now. He wondered if he could see her here, maybe they could exchange hellos and chat about the Clan life. A bubble of joy came to his stomach, it was completely surprising to him and he tried to shake it off. You weren't supposed to be so eager to see cats from other clans, but his mind searched back to the time with Shadestar who he had grown so affectionate for. The lean cat shook himself, and his dark eyes looked for the young warrior that he was so happy to see again.
Scarletsparrow's shoulder muscles bunched up, her teeth gritting in concentration. Her claws unsheathed, and her hindquarters tensed. Suddenly, she leapt up, paws outstretched, to a tree. She scrambled up it quite gracefully, her claws digging into the right bark marks. The she-cat's tail streamed out behind her as she leapt from branch to branch, climbing higher. "Come together...right now.." She sang under her breath, letting out a note as she hit the branches. "Over me."
He could hear the scrabble of paws, and her soft voice from afar. His ears cocked forward, she clearly was not on the ground. Her voice was distant, fur her scent was strong in his nostrils that it was hard to breathe without catching the scent of her. His eyes traveled up the rough side of a tree and finally, he saw her sleek form, she was bigger now, and stronger. He could feel his breath catch in his throat as he looked at her. Again, he cursed himself about being so able to feel affections for another cat. He shuffled his paws slightly, but when a wave of bravery came over him he started towards the tree in long, bold steps. He tried to appear as confident as possible, but internally his heart was at war with itself. He hoped desperately that he was making the right choice. He crouched low and launched himself at the bark, and started the brutal ascent upward; his claws ached as he pulled his own weight further and further up into the gnarly branches of the leafless tree. Suneagle felt hopelessly exposed as he left the ground behind, following Scarletsparrow with every ounce of energy that he had in his middle sized body. As he worked and worked, he finally found himself coming towards her. His breath was ragged from the exertion, and he slowed slightly and crept onto the branch where the WindClan cat had stopped. He lashed his tail wildly, managing to keep his balance on his precarious perch. The RiverClan tom let out a breath, and stepped forward and pressed a nose to her cheek with a slow purr. "Miss me?" He asked with a gravelly voice.
Scarletsparrow seemed to jump slightly, her claws digging into the branch. When she felt his cold nose press against her furry cheek, she grinned. "Hey, fishbrain." She grinned, turning around on the branch. She balanced out, her paws making quiet scrambling noise as she turned. Her orange-flicked ears pricked, and she spotted a skinny gray and black figure on the ground, seeming to wheeze. "Hey- isn't that Shadestar?" She asked, puzzled, turning to Suneagle's scarred face.
The scarred cat looked down upon the ground, happy with her reaction at his touch. But at the sight of Shade on the ground made him nervous, what was she doing here? She was gone when he had woken up that night, and what had she to return here when he was finding someone who lived with the clans? A look of sorrow flashed across his eyes as he thought about it, and what he was about to say to the she-cat he was beginning to like a lot more than just a friend. "Forget her, she’s a loner, remember? She’s just Shade now..." He couldn't forget her, and silently he prayed for her to get better and have a fortunate hunt tonight. He faced her with a smile on his face, but it was forced as he tried to ignore the weak loner below, he tried not to connect her with the she-cat he had spent those nights with, but just a loner who had fallen to the fates of winter. Suneagle dipped his head towards hers and brushed his whiskers on her face, "Let’s go into the woods and... talk." He whispered, his voice meanignful if quivering in the slightest bit. The tom wanted her alone, and out of this tree where he felt exposed to the cats below.
Scarletsparrow's eye brows rose. "But...But shouldn't we-" She cut off, as she saw the ThunderClan medicine cat reach Shade. She watched for a minute, before turning back to Suneagle. "Well, okay. The woods it is." A mischevious grin broke across her face. "Race you down!" She yelled, already starting to race down the tree.
As he struggled down the tree, he mostly fell over himself as he struggled to the ground. But he felt elated, like he could just fly into the sky and bring out the sun again. He wished he could do that, just to let her warm her pelt, even if he was in the cold. Just to see her happy would make him warm inside, he would've been happy that way but he couldn't fly and bring the sun to the sky again. All he could do was wish, and when he was here, he was warm enough, he didn't need that fiery ball, he had it all here. Someone, he reached the ground unscathed, aside from the chips of bark in his fur but he didn't mind that so much. Suneagle's dark eyes gleamed with happiness, he had forgotten his ravaged features for now, but as he looked at Shade on the ground, he bit back a whimper and turned away from her, shoving her out of his head, it was all Scarletsparrow now. He pressed himself against her, forgetting the Clan boundaries, and he hoped he was passing on the right message, he knew that he wanted to be more than friends. The tom bent to lick her ear, "Come on, and let’s get out of here." He purred seductively.
Scarletsparrow felt something strange wracking at her stomach. She blinked momentarily, feeling unsure about what she should too. Blinking, she looked over at Suneagle, rolling her shoulders back and raising her head. Suddenly, a grin broke across her face. "Well, okay. Wanna race there?" She hoped she didn't seem strange, but then again, overall...she was strange.
Suneagle gave a little smile, "Well, fine! But you're going to win!" He laughed, Shade out of sight, out of mind to him. "RiverClan cats are too fat to keep up with a sleek beauty like you." The warrior smiled as he pointed out what fish did to a cat when eaten everyday during the warmer seasons. But he tried his best, he threw his weight forward and started at a swift sprint toward the white coated place of the forest that would be somewhere lovely if things went right, he was swift on his feet but she was clearly the faster one with a lighter body than him. Thump, thump, thump, his paws beat on the ground heavily, as he tried to keep up, but as the forest neared quickly, he found himself falling behind. He didn't feel anger or frustration though, the running was nice, and the wind coursed through his whiskers.
Scarletsparrow let out a laugh, turning around to the orange tom lagging behind. "Hurry up!" She chidded him, her orange and gray paws thudding against the ground evenly. Her unsheathed claws dug into the snow, wind buffeting at her fur. She gritted her teeth in concentration, rolling her shoulders as she leapt over a large fallen log, disappearing into the forest.
He snorted, with a well meant chuckle, and he charged forward a little faster. The warrior wanted to at her side again, and he wouldn't lose her to the forest and snow, he smiled and launched himself over the fallen log that obstructed his path. His leap was mighty and surprisingly he cleared it well, and ran on without stumbling. Though he was panting, he ran on relentlessly, determined to not lose the fleeting tail which he would hardly see through the undergrowth; even if it was withered and shrunken from the leaf-bare's cruel touch. The snow irritated him; it made him even slower, with twice the energy taken away from his worn body. Suneagle hopped through the snow, and let out a burst of endurance that brought him straight into a deep patch of snow. Now frustrated, he struggled with flailing limbs to escape from the icy coffin. His strong hind legs kicked at the ground and he broke free of the ice, and stumbled forward and surprising ran into Scarletsparrow's behind. She had stopped in a clearing. It was quite far away from the much larger space, and the snow on the ground was thin and untouched. Dull sunlight radiated off the frozen crystals that reflected and shimmered. He let out a breath, his fur hot from running into her rear end, but this was a perfect place for them to be. It was distant and lonely, and only a soft bird that had stayed for the cold let out a distant song.
"Oof!" She gasped, the breath leaving her as Suneagle slammed into her body from the run. Scarletsparrow fell forward slightly, but she caught herself in the snow. Ice flew out from under her gray-and-orange paws. "Jeez, I didn't know you were so eager." She grinned, turning around to face Suneagle with a sarcastic glint in her orange eyes.
He chuckled, and stepped forward into the crystalline snow. It crunched beneath his paws and he hardly felt the cold on it. He closed his eyes and breathed in softly. He liked the quiet, it was almost serene. Suneagle turned around to look at him, his dark eyes shone slightly in the bleak sunlight. Despite the feeling of safety around him, he felt nervous, wary about his actions and thoughtful about the way he put his paws down in front of him. His eyes glanced at the ground, but they returned to her face with a renewed confidence. The warrior twined his tail around her neck and drew her closer, purring softly, "How are you?" He murmured a coy smile on his warm face. The heat radiated from his pelt, anxiety at his actions fueled the warmth, but he knew he was moving rightly, he just hoped she would take it the right way in turn.
Scarletsparrow's ears twitched and she leaned against Suneagle, taking in the warmth. "I'm pretty good," She grinned, her orange eyes flicking up. Apprehension and nervousness seemed to claw at her stomach. The she-cat's orange tipped tail flicked. "How about you?"
He touched his nose to the back of her ear, a rumbling sound coming up from his throat. Suneagle could feel happiness coming through his limbs; he didn't even notice the snow or the cold as he closed his eyes with the pleasure of her company. "I'm perfect." He returned, his voice thick and warm from the loving feelings that were coming off of him. But he faltered and nearly drew back, he was unsure about how she felt. The tom swallowed nervously, he didn't want to dive into a river with only a mouse-length of water. That meant pain, and he didn't want that, he didn't want to lose her. Suneagle's tail dropped off from around her neck, and he drew backwards. A quivering paw step away, he felt cold, it was sudden and it chilled his blood. His eyes gazed into hers, they were questioning and weary, as if he had run so far to find he had to keep going relentlessly. "How do you feel?" He asked simply, eyes bleary and odd looking.
Scarletsparrow grinned, no trace of sarcasm could be found in her orange eyes. "I'm perfect, too." Warmth prickled at her fur, making her shiver in the cold, snowy night. The gray-and-orange she-cat leaned closer to Suneagle, resting her smaller head on his broad shoulder, letting out a content sigh. A rumble of a purr was released from her chest, a happy sound.
He suddenly felt no more worry in his soul; it was like it was like all the doubt in the world was torn away from him in just a swoop of claws. A feeling of confidence burst through him, it was so quick and wild he could hardly believe it. All he could do was smile down at her, and gaze with a pure mind and heart. He wished he could say words to describe his emotions, but it was so different and strong that no version of speech could satisfy him in all this. Any word would do no justice to this; the young cat buried his face into her fur with a low rumble. Suneagle opened his dark eyes slightly, as they stood together, without feeling the cold just sharing in each other’s holy warmth. "Scarletsparrow..." He breathed, her scent filling his nose, "Spend the night with me in the forest, away from everyone else. Our clans will be fine for tonight..." Somehow, he pulled himself away from her, his eyes bright with elation and innocence, and a simple need to be loved.
Scarletsparrow felt a warm flush sweep across under her fur, warming her entirely. Twining her tail with Suneagle, she smiled softly, too shy to look up. "Okay...I will." She answered his questions, looking up to meet his green eyes. Slowly, she led him deeper into the dark forest for the night.
