Blueestar wrapped her tail around her paws. Her firey eyes were dull with exhaustion but she sat eagerly at the base of the river.
Owlstar's nostrils flared as he padded softly on the river damp grass. Mud squished between his toes and flicked his paw crossly before trailing his paw in the cool waters. The ginger tabby lifted his scarred head as a familiar scent wafted by. He let go of a little smile as he saw her.
Blueestar looked up. Relief flooded through her body as she saw Owlstar approaching. Getting to her paws she padded up to him, rubbing her head against his shoulder.
A heavy purr rumbled out of his throat. He licked the top of her head gently. "I've missed you." He whispered in her ear. He nuzzled her sweet smelling fur, but she smelled different.
A small smile flickered over her face. Sitting down she re-wrapped her tail around her paws. "How are you?" she asked, but her words sounded slurry and slow to her.
The tom cat pressed his nose against hers. He could sense a delicate change in the sound of her voice, the look in her eyes, and the smell of her fur. A flash of worry came over his single dark green eye. He remained composed, but he only hung to it by a thread. "I've been lonely without you, my dear." Owlstar mewed quietly. "I hate being away from you."
She nodded her head, "I hate being apart aswell... how goes Sunpaw?" She mumbled. Her eyes lids started to droop, but as they closed they flashed back open with a start.
He grimaced slightly, "He... has no memory of either of us." His paws shuffled on the misty grass, he unwillingly looked at the river and he shuddered. "I can't believe a Riverclan cat lost to the river... learning to fish." He flattened his ears practically shamefully at the thought.
Blueestar rubbed her head against his shoulder, "Don't worry. I believe he will return to us."
Owlstar shook his head jerkily, "We can only hope, until then we have to stick him in the elder's den because he keeps getting lost in the woods!" His stubby tail lashed the best it could as the reflection of the water flickered in his green eyes. He grimaced painfully.
Blueestar leaned against him, with a tired sigh. A faint purr came from her. "I miss all of my kits," She mumbled, not really paying attention to her words.
The ginger tabby sighed dreamily. He licked her cheek soothingly. "I miss them too. With...Sapphirepaw..." he hesitated for a second, flicking his mangled paw. "...Gone. And Sunpaw without liable memory it feels like Riverclan as gotten so lonely." Owlstar gave his shaggy fur a few rough licks. "Even Badgerheart is more reserved then he usually is."
Blueestar started to drift off again but her eyes flashed open again. "Ugh," She shook her head in frustration.
His eyes flashed toward her. His eye narrowed slightly in confusion and interest. The tabby licked face rhythmically, and murmured soft words. "You seem tired, my love." He purred, "Rest...I'll catch something for you to eat when you wake." A smile slid smoothly on his haggard face.
She glanced at him, and looked to the ground. Her shoulders hunching and any act of wellness gone. "I can't," she mumbled in defeat.
Concerned took control of his features. He nuzzled her neck as his purr stopped. "Why not, my dear?" His torn ears flicked with worry. "Do you have nightmares?" He asked, glancing at the staring shadows. "I'll be here. I won't leave."
A whimper seeped out of her as she huddled into him. "Every time my eyes close, their eyes peer back at me. Every time I try eat I can taste their foul breathe," She shook her head in distress, "I forced a mouse down but it... it had to come back up, I couldn't stand it,"
"Oh, Blueestar." He sighed sympathetically, and he pressed his nose into her gray fur. "Don't worry about them anymore. Its probably my fault, I'm the odd one. My brother and me taint their blood." Owlstar's fur prickled down his spine and he looked at her. "But we still have two perfect kits, with memory or not." His ear flicked in dry humor.
Blueestar nodded slowly. A feeling of comfort spread through her as her eyes started to close. "Thankyou," She murmured softly before slipping into sleep.
"Wonderful." He purred, and licked her ear. "Maybe I can get her to eat something." Owlstar snuggled down next to her, his ginger fur mingling with her gray. He waited until her breathing was deep and slow. He stood on sturdy paws even though his balance was corrupt from the lack of a tail. Owlstar plunged head first into the black waters in pursuit of a fish. His way was unorthodox but as his paws splashed through the water his claws struck the silvery scales.
He hooked the fish at the end of his claws and scrutinized it slowly. "Foxdung. Thunderclan cats absolutely hate fish. To this day elders from other clans call me a fish face!" He scoffed, and dropped the fish near her head with a soft thump. He decided to catch something more forest worthy. The old cat shook his pelt as orbs of water slid gracefully from his oily fur. His ears were cocked forward, and the whisper of a mouse's heartbeat in the leaf litter. His paws tapped on the forest floor before he leaped forward with outstretched claws. Owlstar's black claws pierced the delicate rodent skin. "Perfect!" He exclaimed a little to loud, "Forest food!"
Hearing Owlstar's shout, the blueish gray leader sat up. The nap may not have been long, but it was enough to rejuvinate her. Blinking she looked down at her paws, "Fish!" She exclaimed. Her fiery eyes lit up, and she bent down to take a swift bite not even noticing that their was no foul taste or scent surronding it.
The mouse hung by it's tail from his mouth. His whiskers twitched in amusement. "Well, I caught you a mouse as well, most Thunderclan cats dislike even the look of fish." He shrugged his broad shoulders and lay by her again. The ginger tabby tossed the fresh mouse by her paws. "Dessert!" He chortled in light of his own joke.
Blueestar rumbled, flashing him a cheerfull grin. "I have always had a... liking to fish," Sweeping her tonge lightly around her muzzle she bent down and started to take a bite from the mouse. Chewing the soft meat she glanced back at Owlstar, "What about you?
"Huh? 'Bout what? I ate while those pleasant apprentices waited on me." He purred fondly at them, "They only act grumpy to be cool." Owlstar scoffed.
Blueestar chuckled lightly under her breathe. "Ahh, apprentices," Flicking her tail she cocked her head lightly to the side. "I need to train mine,"
"Ah, apprentices." He sighed looking at the darkening sky. "I haven't had myself an apprentice for such a long time. I have no patience you see." He licked his paws gruffly and stifled a yawn.
Pressing her self against Owlstar she rested her head on her paws. "Thankyou for being here with me," she mumbled lightly. Her eyelid began drooping till they gave way to sleep.
He licked her head gently, in long rhythmic strokes of his tongue. "I'll protect from anything, my love." He purred soothingly. The ginger tabby would lay by her side all night just to listen to her breath in the cool air. He smiled sweetly and hummed a tuneless song.
The dark brown tabby appeared from the shadows. A wicked grin sneaked onto his face as he spotted his father and mother. "She is quite lovely. Ahh, thouh she is only peacefull when she is asleep isn't she?" He snickered, his yellow stained teeth flashed in another grin.
Owlstar raised his head solemnly. "I would leave if I were you." He growled under his breath, "You are not one of us." He rested his head on Blueestar's shoulders defensively, "I won't let you hurt her anymore."
The ginger tabby's eye widened with horror just in wonderment to what his brother would concoct for a ceremony. He knew it would contain destruction of something priceless and unforgivable. Owlstar licked Blueestar's head gently and murmured soft things. As he eyed the shadows with terror.
Blueestar shifted, blinking she looked up at Owlstar. She blinked as she sensed stress comming from Owlstar, and the fear scent from him, "O-Owl?"
Blueestar blinked in confusion. Getting to her paws she brushed by him, "Owlstar what is -" She choked. Her eyes flashed, "He was here,"
A small breathe came in than exited. "I know that Owlstar," She glanced at him, wondering how he was always able to protect her. "I can protect myself as well, and I have my clan to back me up," Her eyes lowered, "Even if you aren't fighting besides me I know you will always be with me. Protecting me anyway you can, and for that I am even more grateful."
Owlstar turned his guilty face away from her. He seemed to droop more then usually, his thick fur hanging ragged on his burly form. "I don't know how much longer I can see all the blood in the world." He sighed deeply his chest expanding. His claws flexed and sank into the dark soil. His green eye glistened and filled with shame and fear. He gave his head a shake. He wouldn't let that happen.
She pressed into him, "It will be alright no matter what," She murmured softly. Giving him a swift lick on the cheek she smiled lovingly at him, "We will have eachother, no matter where we are,"
He smiled meekly. The tom rubbed against her shoulder. "Thats true. But I have to return to our lost son..." Owlstar turned and licked her over the ear, he could feel the water lap at his hind paws sank into the silky mud. The cool reassurance of the river didn't seem to help him anymore as he remembered poor Sunpaw. But the water would always be his home, the place he was born to swim and flourish. But where water brought life it still carried death on its black waves.
Talking a step back her eyes lingered on him, "Stay safe and remember that he will return to us," Sunpaw will have too. I will loose my mind if he never regains his memory.
The elder's eye glazed over with sadness and he twirled around and looked at the churning river. His ears flicked as he could almost see his son flailing in the water as he struggled to keep living. He leaped into the water, his paws were strong as they stroked the water. But as if his spiritual stalkers were watching him again he began to choke as the liquid smothered his face and lungs. His single eye bulged in sudden panic before his outstretched claws pawed at the river bottom. He heaved himself onto the bank, water streaming off his pelt. Owlstar stood panting for a moment before he looked over his shoulder a his mate before he leaped into the darkening strand of the willow trees.
Ember grinned as his father left. He glared at his mother's shape. Moving like a snake, he slithered through the shadows. He snickered lightly, "Mother value your life while you still have it,"
A shiver ran up her spine. Glancing at where she heard thevoice from, and if she looked carefully one of the sets of eyes that haunted her. Shuddering she turned and fled back to her camp, knowing that anytime spent with her family was going to be cherished more after this day.
