Badgerstar coughed painfully as smoke whirled around his muzzle and slowly began to suffocate him. He wasn't even aware of the reeking black cloud coming at him as he tossed and turned in his next in a foggy den. All at one his head whipped upward. His dark green eyes went wild with fear, smoke clogged his den, it stung his throat and burned his eyes. With a burst of adrenaline he ran throw the sparking lichen that covered his den.
The ginger tabby couldn't hear his clan mates, he most have been the last to appear from his den and by the leaping flames at were consuming Serpentclan it was odd he hadn't been awakened by their deafening roar. If he hadn't been captured in his nightmares it was possible he would've made it out in time for him to escape comfortably. But they had and his fur was scorched by the sweltering heat the towered over him.
The middle aged leader gagged as the poisonous air went into his nose and muddled his brain and actions. The world passed in a foggy blur broken by the hot, livid flames at that reached out to bite at his paws and tail. Badgerstar charged forward, he was being circled in the fire and his only escape was dwindling dangerously. Flames flared to join together almost planning his demised in ashes. He kicked forward and whipped through the flames receiving vicious bites to his flank. The burns were agonizing and he could hardly believe the pain, he wished he was fighting a more touchable foe. At least he would be able to run away from them.
The smoke blinded him and the snap of charred tree limbs echoed through the ravaged forest. He was surprised he could even hear the cracks over the bellow of fire, he knew he had lives left but he couldn't just let them go to waste like this with an undefeated foe. The rugged tom cat struggled to his paws the burns seared every time he moved a muscle but he fought on with a vigor. He didn't even recognize his forest anymore, it was black and burned wood that was a mystery to him now.
He charged forward but felt heat on his face that caused him to pant exsessively. For a moment he let his eyes open slightly, he was once again surrounded by flames that could have towered over the flames he had escaped before but this time there was no way out. No dangerous run for freedom just a pit of whirling fire that waited for him to make a wrong move. Before, his eyes had been narrowed but in his surprise they had widened to the size of moons. Badgerstar's small body lashed in either direction trying to find a way, any way. He knew if he were to run through the angry flames he would be burned to death in a matter of moments but in the smaller flames that still towered forbiddingly he would be burned, but not dead.
Welling up his courage in his narrow chest he ran at his top speed at the fire despite the consequences. As he entered the fire, the heat of it was overwhelming but as he got closer to the heart he felt as if the flesh was being torn from his bone and melting into the ground as he ran. His fur was being scorched as sparks flew and landed on his battered body. But just as he thought he couldn't take it anymore he broke free of the inferno into the open land. Smoke still stole the breath from his lungs but the fire was weak here and he slowed to a wheezy walk. He coughed weakly, and pushed forward until he reached the edge of the woodland. In a daze he saw a group of cats he didn't know huddled together but his vision blacked out and he collapsed to his side.
Badgerstar felt his world being swallowed up but he didn't want to die. He may have been older then all his other clan mates but he still had life ahead on him. His eyes opened to see a ravine spread out in front him. Few were there, his father way absent, as was his long lost mother. He wondered if she was dead or just gone from his world. But he did see his sister, Bramblefire and her devoted mate Rabbitfoot. They looked so young together like new warriors or green-leaf loves. He smiled despite himself, he wished them well.
"Badgerstar..." Bramblefire sighed with an annoyed look to her face, "Why can't you stay out of trouble?" She licked his singed forehead and the tingling that the flames made vanished. It was replaced with a temporary feeling of old youth that didn't come much anymore. Badgerstar looked up at her with a pleading expression that seemed to beg for her just to take him life away now so his living suffering would be ended for good. But the future made him worry about where he would go, to Silverclan or the Dark Forest.
"Its not your time yet, my brother." Bramblefire soothed, her tail lightly touched his burnt flank. "But your body will recover soon, but don't get caught by the fire you are not strong enough now to endure it again." The brown tabby she-cat turned slowly and padded back toward Rabbitfoot. Their similar coats mingled together as they began to glisten with sparkling silver before vanishing all together.
Badgerstar gasped and his eyes burst open. He rushed to his paws to quickly and blood flowed to his head in a burst making his vision blotch out for a terrifying moment. But it cleared and he sagged, gasping for breath. He could still hear the crackle of fire and the weakness of losing a life began to take over. He wished he could just sleep it all off but the tenderness in his sides made it hard to think of sleep.
He began to limp away from his forest to soak his paws in a nearby stream. The tom cat sighed and gazed over his shoulder. The glow warmed his face but he hoped it never came any closer to him then that. But for now, he didn't mind all that he worried about was his six remaining lives.
