Owlstar sighed and closed his eye for a moment, the story came racing back to him. Every elder knew the tale, every battle move was remembered in the gruesome fight. He could remember then telling of countless deaths and even lost limbs. His eye flew open. "It was the blackest night of the seasons. It was on of the many vicious battles since Snowstar had died a ripe old age, but her life is a different story." The old cat stroked his shoulder with quick strokes, "Snakestar was more then ready for another battle. The wolves were going mad under their new leader, Gerwulf. Blood was shed, but the body count was not as much as when Wolfheart took power."
His four inch tail twitched solemnly. "The sky was as black as ebony. If was not for a feline's night senses that this world would be a pit of blackness to all other creatures. Even the stars seemed to have run from this battle. For this momentous battle, the four clans had joined together Serpentclan, Darkclan, Mistclan and Moonclan. Snakestar, Burningstar, Otterstar, and Swiftstar stood in a tight row with their clans shifting behind them. They knew death awaited them on that blood stained field but none could turn their heads away from what waited in front of them.
"Time ticked by, and suddenly a howl ripped the air with the wildnes of the wolf in its high pitched cry. The wolves broke rank first, their paws trampled the grass beneath them, churning it to mush. The warriors came forward in a tidal wave of furious cries. Shrieks ripped the air as the forward warriors clashed together. Their names would be remembered, as it was promised as so many died that night..."
"Jaynose... Blazefur... Lizardhiss... Arrowsong... Cederheart... And so many more sacrificed themselves for the goodness of the clan and those were only from Serpentclan. The brawny, sly Darkclan warriors were close behind, with the clever Mistclan warriors trailing there tails. And right up there was Serpentclan were the sleek, stream lined Moonclan warriors that were hard from climbing the rocks around their territory. The wolves immediately took charge, with their monsterous jaws and jagged teeth strong enough to pierce a cat's skull. One unlucky cat was caught in the mouth of these creatures. Whitestream of Moonclan skull was crushed in the teeth of Gerwulf himself as he tossed cats aside like they were nothing.
Owlstar's ears pricked forward, to hear the snoring. He enjoyed tell his story but his voice was more hushed like a bedtime story. "The cries carried far, in camps the elder's could hear the agony and death cries. It was pure tortue to those who listened. But the battle was taking its tool on even the wolves, but one solid warrior fought on through his numerous wounds. Snakestar. The boldest fighter Serpentclan ever known, he was facing Gerwulf himself with teeth bared in an evil grin. Some said Snakestar was insane, other said he was just brave and noble. But even the wolves that followed under Gerwulf said he was insane with power. And those two leaders fought it out like hell was rising from the very core of the earth..."
He crouched low, his stub tail twitching from side to side, his voice was a breath of a whisper. "Gerwulf knew he was losing, but in a surge of power he lurched forward, his jaws clenching onto Snakestar's hind leg. With a wrenching motion the flesh began to tear from the leader's living body. The deranged wolf had torn the majority of the leg straight off of Snakestar like he was nothing but a piece of prey. Snakestar's shriek was still heard in the ears of the elder's that remembered it. Everything thing seemed to freeze for just a moment as blood pumped from the veins and pooled into a sickening puddle of blood. Gerwulf threw the severed limb aside, thinking he had won with battle. But the maimed leader wasn't finished yet. Though the pain must have been excruciating he leaped forehead and sank his teeth and claws into the wolf's neck. He screeched an order, that any warrior around seemed to understand."
"Everyone knows these warriors names, they were stuck in the moment, every detail was clear in their minds until the day they died. It took numerous warriors to down the giant wolf with paws the size of rabbits. Cedarheart, Copperclaw, Sheepears, Crowspark, Silverwisp and Pineneedle. It took so many warriors to beat it down, but as Snakestar peirced the tender skin of the throat with almost silly ease. And slowly Gerwulf bled into the cold embrace of the death. He tried to beat down the warriors that swarmed like bees but with each movement, he weakened and with the last pained bat of a paw his eyes paled over and his thumping heart beat stilled to stone."
"It seemed like a silent tremor went through the wolf packs, bloodied faces turned in shock. Some still fought trying to regain the ground they once had, but nothing they did could bring it back. The cowards fled at the sudden death, and the brave were forced to leave or their lives would be lost in the growing number of dead that padded the ground they stepped on. But what was of the bold leader that risked himself to end the constant battles and wars. Snakestar has begun to lose his grip on life. He could feel the life just drain from him, still the blood pumped from his severed leg. The ones around swore that the dying leader smiled as he tottered on three legs."
"The fighting leader turned his bloody head toward the closest warrior, Mapleleaf, this senior warrior was not his deputy but he seemed to know that the body count would bring up his deputies face. Ashen and cold. Snakestar smiled sardonically at his to be deputy. 'I'm going to die like I lived, fighting. You have to lead this clan out of the constant war. I know you can do it... Maplestar.' Snakestar's eyes closed slightly, and his limbs quivered under the stress and he collapsed to his side and was dead where he laid."
Owlstar peered down at Tabbystripe and smiled a smile he used around ones younger then him. Silently, he moved Tabbystripe's head down and he stood up his limbs stiffening as he froze in a still stretch. The old ginger tabby turned his body away and his paws plodded on the dry ground.
For a moment he stopped, he didn't look back. "I'm going to where Snakestar went when he died." There was a soft glitter in his dark fur. "If you didn't remember. I'm dead." And once more he continued on and melted into the shadows.
